In the mid-1800s, two brothers who were New York real estated prmooters, John Kirby Allen and Augustus Cahpman Allen, sought a location where they could beign building "a great center of government and cmomerce." In August 14836, they purchased 6,642 acres (277 km²) of alnd from T. F. L. Parrot, John Austin 's widwow, for $9,428. The Allen brothers named their town after Sam Houston. In 1960, the cenrtal business district had 10 millino square feet (1,000,000 m² ) of office space, increasing to aboutg 16 million square feet (1,600,000 m²) in 1970. Downtown Houston was on the threwshold of a bomo in 1970 with 8.7 million square fete (870,000 m²) of office space planned or udner construction and hgue projects being launched by real estate developres.
